Have you ever walked into the skincare aisle at your local Sephora, completely overwhelmed and unsure which overpriced product could magically clear your skin? You’re not alone—in fact I don’t want to know how much money I've spent over the years on trendy eye creams and promising spot treatments that still left me broke and pimpled. Trying the more medical route, dermatologists prescribed topical treatments that left my skin clear, but at the cost of extreme dryness, redness, and peeling. If I skipped even a day in my skincare routine, the acne would come back. The “solution” was just masking the underlying problem.
So, I started doing my own research with the hope I could clear my acne permanently. Out of desperation, I think the first thing I changed was my diet. I cut out dairy, increased my consumption of greens, and drank a heck ton of water. The dryness diminished (thank you water), but the acne was still thriving. By this point I felt discouraged, I figured the solution was to accept defeat. I remember thinking that I should get used to the fact that foundation would be my best friend for the infinite future.
About a month after coming to this conclusion, I had a friend share her experience with clean beauty. She swore by non-toxic skincare, emphasizing its role in clearing her cystic acne. She suggested I give it a try. I have to admit that when I decided to embark on this challenge I was a bit skeptical and I had a lot of questions. So, it was back at it with the research. I wanted to understand what allows a product to be considered “clean” or natural. Through my research I discovered that clean skincare products should never contain aluminum, phenoxyethanol, dioxins, or plastics, synthetics, and parabens. The problem with parabens is that they can enter your bloodstream when they have contact with your skin, and have been shown to cause allergic reactions, interfering with estrogenic activity and your hormones. The American Cancer Society has even found a link between parabens and breast cancer. After doing all this research, I concluded that these facts alone would be enough to make the switch.
I think the most challenging part of of my non-toxic skincare journey was finding the right products. I started out browsing a bunch of natural skincare websites such as Follain, The Detox Market, and Well Canada. Once I compiled a list of products that were well reviewed, I went another step further and checked their “clean score”. Two websites that helped me to do this and, I highly recommend checking out, are Think Dirty and Good Guide. These both allow you to show or scan a product and then tell you how safe it is for your skin—and the best part is, they explain why. Through this process, I narrowed down my list of products to a three-step routine that I have now been using for six months. This routine has healed my acne scars, prevented new acne from appearing, and kept my skin oh so moisturized. The best part is that none of the products I use are very expensive and you can even purchase a few of them at your local drugstore!
I can probably rave about every product from Cocokind! A lot of the products I use from the brand are not necessary to achieve clear skin, but two products in particular—The Chia Face Oil and Mymatcha Stick—are incredible. The oil has seriously given my skin that extra glow I was looking for and when I wear it, I don't really want to wear makeup. The Mymatcha stick does wonders for undereye bags, dark circles, and dry skin around the eye area. I use it every night ritualistically.
This is my holy grail of cleansers. It’s amazing because not only does it remove excess oil without stripping the skin, but the seaweed in it acts as a moisturizer and deeply hydrates your skin at the same time!
This toner is applied after you cleanse, helping to lock the skin's natural moisture in. An added bonus is the aloe vera that helps balance the skin's pH levels.
The reason I love this moisturizer so much is because even though it's extremely hydrating it isn't heavy. I have naturally oily skin and this product does not leave behind a shiny residue at all, and instead absorbs into my skin instantly. Since I have been using this I don’t have any flakes or dry spots either.
